Rooted in Big Rig Rugby’s ethos of building foundations for players to play at their highest level, Rugby Bairns focuses on developing core movement skills such as running, balance, coordination, catching and confidence through engaging, play-based rugby activities. Why Free Play Matters at the End of a Structured Session
Ending a structured session with free play gives young children the opportunity to put into practice everything they have just learned in their own way. While coaching provides guidance, free play encourages creativity, decision-making and problem-solving without constant instruction.
During free play, children naturally explore movement, communicate with others, develop confidence and build social skills. They learn to negotiate rules, work together, overcome challenges and become more independent. It also allows coaches to observe how children apply skills in a more realistic environment, providing valuable insight into their understanding and development.
Perhaps most importantly, free play keeps sport fun. It gives children ownership of their experience, helping them develop a lifelong love of physical activity rather than simply following instructions. A balance of structured coaching and unstructured play creates the best environment for learning, enjoyment and long-term player development, ensuring every child leaves the session smiling, engaged and excited to return.
